I’ve never been a tea person.  I’ve tried to be one my whole life because there’s just something about tea that seems so sophisticated and fancy.  I wanted to be sophisticated and fancy.  Instead I’m almost always about that coffee life.  Except when it comes to a Chai Latte.

A few years ago though, I had a Starbucks gift card and decided to try something new -  I asked the barista what she recommended, and she told me that Chai Lattes were her favorite, so I got one and I don’t want to sound dramatic, but my life was forever changed.

I don’t get them often and up until recently never tried to make them for myself, but when Covid put an end to Starbucks runs, I figured I needed to learn how to make them myself, and it literally could not be simpler.

    Let’s Talk about Chai

You can make a Chai Latte in several different ways.  This is the way that I prefer, mostly because it’s the simplest method.  Tazo makes a great Chai concentrate with a great flavor and it’s super easy to make.  If you’d prefer total control over your ingredients, you could make your own Chai by steeping chai tea as indicated on their packaging, and then adding the steamed milk.

A latte at its core is espresso mixed with steamed milk, and a Chai latte just substitutes chai in place of the espresso.  You could make what’s called a “dirty chai” by adding a shot of espresso to the mix as well.

    Ingredient List

    • Tazo Chai Latte Concentrate
    • Milk
    • Whipped Cream (optional, but delicious)

    Recipe Highlights:

    • Only 2 ingredients
    • Can be dairy free
    • Can be made in under 5 minutes
    • Can be made hot or iced
    • Full of warming spices
    • Can be made “skinny” if wanted

How do I froth my own milk?

There are a few options here.  I have a milk frother that I use, but you can absolutely do this without one.

    • Pour milk into a mason jar, seal the lid tight, and shake shake shake the jar for a full minute, or until the milk has doubled in volume.
    • Remove the lid and microwave the milk for 30-45 seconds.
    • This method isn’t going to give you coffee shop level foam, but it gets the job done with no extra money spent.

How do I make an Iced Chai Latte?

Stir together your chai concentrate and milk without warming it up and pour over ice.  You can then froth a smaller amount of milk to pour over, or you could just top with whipped cream.

Can this be made dairy free?

Absolutely!  Almond milk works well, and Trader Joe’s Oat Milk (the refrigerated kind, not the shelf stable) froths REALLY well!

What kind of Chai should I use?

You can use whatever kind you like, but I prefer Tazo Classic Chai Latte for this.  It’s a little on the sweet side though, so if you prefer it less sweet, they make a skinny version.
