A timeless classic sandwich: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches never go out of style! But have you ever thought about making it in an air fryer? Total game changer that picky eaters will love!

This delicious air fryer peanut butter and jelly sandwich might just be my new favorite thing. I've for sure been making it on repeat for weeks now, It's a great snack or quick meal and it's super customizable so you're basically getting a new sandwich every time you make it!

Take two slices of bread, your favorite peanut butter and your favorite jelly, and bam! You have a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich but with a little something extra. The hardest part is waiting for the butter to soften up.

Say goodbye to your regular old sandwich and say hello to your new favorite snack - with gooey peanut butter and warm jelly, it's like a Smucker's Uncrustables, but you know exactly what's going into it.

You only need a few basic ingredients to make this sandwich, and you probably have all of them already. If you're allergic to peanuts, you can use any different nut butter you choose. This is one of those easy recipes that isn't even a recipe - it's just a process.

Instructions to make Air Fryer Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

PRO TIP: when spreading the peanut butter and jelly leave enough room around the edges of the bread so that the warm peanut butter and jelly don't seep out the sides while frying.

    • Take a slice of bread and spread one side of the bread with peanut butter.
    • Take the next slice of bread and spread with jelly.
    • Put the two together to make a sandwich, and then spread the outsides with a thin layer of butter.
    • Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket and fry for 3 minutes or so, or until the bread is golden brown. Then flip the sandwich so brown the other side for another 2-3 minutes.

Keep a close eye on things while air frying - check the sandwich every minute or so to make sure it's not getting too brown and keep in mind that cooking time will vary based on the model of air fryer you use.

    Substitutions and Variations:

Bread: I'm for the classics when it comes to this sandwich, so I stick with a sweet, hearty white bread. But you can use whole wheat bread, sourdough bread, rye - whatever your favorite is.

Peanut butter: I prefer a creamy peanut butter, but you can use chunky peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower seed butter.

Jelly: Strawberry jelly or strawberry jam is a classic for a reason. Grape jelly would be great. I used raspberry fruit spread for the pictures in this post, and it was delicious!

    Add-Ons:

You could add slices of banana or fresh strawberries!

    Equipment

I use this air fryer in my kitchen - it's a pretty basic model, but it gets the job done, and its size is great for two people.

I've said that waiting for the butter to soften is the hardest part of this recipe, and that's true. However, if you have a butter bell, you can have spreadable room temperature butter all the time. These are a great way to keep soft butter on hand for when you need it.

    Storing Leftovers:

These are definitely best when eaten right away, but you can keep any leftovers in an airtight container for a day. Reheat in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes before eating leftovers.

What if I don't have an air fryer?

You can easily do this in a pre-heated frying pan over medium heat. Just follow the instructions through step 3, then place the sandwich in the pan for 2-3 minutes per side or until browned.

    Servings 2 Sandwiches

    Ingredients

    • 4 Slices Bread
    • 3 tablespoon Peanut butter
    • 3 tablespoon Jelly or jam
    • 2-3 tablespoon Butter

    Instructions

    • Spread two slices of bread with 1 ½ tablespoon each of peanut butter
    • Spread the other two slices of bread with 1 ½ tablespoon each of jelly or jam.
    • Put the sandwiches together, and spread each piece of bread with ½ to ¾ tablespoon of butter - a light coating all over the bread.
    • Place the sandwich into the air fryer basket, and air fry on 375 for 2-3 minutes per side, checking regularly to make sure the bread isn't burning.

    Notes

    • Depending on your air fryer, you may be able to cook both sandwiches at once.  However don't overcrowd the air fryer, as that will keep the bread from browning as nicely as you want it to.
    • No need to pre-heat your air fryer, but if you want to you can.  It will work well either way.
