People have pretty strong opinions about a certain national coffee chain.  I’ve found that most people either love it or hate it.  I hate to be a fence sitter, but I’m actually pretty neutral about it.  Their coffee is pretty decent.  I’m a big fan of the fancy schmancy drinks, but not such a fan of the price tags that come along with them.  So rather than go without, I decided to make my own fancy drinks at home for less than half the price of what I would normally pay.  They’re also completely delicious, and you control the ingredients that go into them.

Shopping List for White Chocolate Mocha

    • White Chocolate Sauce (I use Torani’s that can be found in the coffee aisle of the grocery store)

    • Espresso (or strong coffee if you don’t have an espresso maker or a Moka pot)

    • Milk

    • Whipped Cream (optional, but delicious)

    Let’s Talk about making Espresso:

I love coffee, but I’ve never been one to drink espresso as it’s own drink.  I also have only recently gotten into making dupes for fancy coffee drinks at home, so I’ve never felt the need for a dedicated espresso machine.

I DO have a Moka Pot however. People in Italy have been making espresso in Moka Pots for decades, and since if anyone knows from a good cup of coffee it’s Italy, I’ve decided that if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.

It’s also surprisingly easy to use, and makes a great, strong cup of coffee.  No, it’s not technically espresso, but we do what we can with what we have.  If you have an espresso maker, definitely use that, but a Moka Pot is a great, inexpensive alternative.

    Recipe Highlights:

    • Easy to make

    • Quick to make

    • Customizable

    • Can be hot or iced

    • Delicious vanilla flavor

    • Can be made dairy free

    FAQ’s

How do I make this iced?  I don’t know if this is the “correct” way, but this is how I do it.

Start by pouring the white chocolate sauce between two glasses or mugs, then add the brewed coffee/espresso and stir to mix in the sauce.  Pour half the milk into each glass.  Then I pull out two new glasses, fill them with ice, and pour the coffee into the ice filled glasses.  Yes, this dirties two extra glasses, but I just feel like you get a colder drink that way.

What kind of coffee should I use?  Illy Coffee actually makes espresso, but I find that it’s not often available at my local store.  I use a Moka Pot to make my coffee for these drinks, and I generally use Lavazza Coffee with it.

Can I use instant espresso?  Absolutely!  Just make up enough that you’ll have three ounces of coffee.

How do I make this dairy free?  You can use any sort of non-dairy milk for this recipe.  Oat milk would be great.  And obviously, leave off the whipped cream.

How can I make this “skinny”?  Use a low-fat milk, and sugar free syrup.

Tips and Tricks for a great White Chocolate Mocha

Make to your tastes:  you can use as much or as little white chocolate syrup as you like.  The 3 tablespoons is a starting point, and what I think works – if you want less, use less!

Using a milk frother:  You can find milk frothers from 10$ up to 100$; either in stick form, or a large gadget that gives you 4 different types of foams.  I have a middle of the road milk frother that I bought years ago that apparently isn’t made any more.  You can get this one or this one at Target for less than 40$.

    White Chocolate Mocha

This White Chocolate Mocha is just like what you’d get from the coffee shop, only half the price and you don’t have to stand in line!

    Ingredients

    White Chocolate Mocha
    • 3 tablespoons white chocolate sauce
    • 3 ounces of espresso or strongly brewed coffee
    • 1 cup milk (whole milk tastes the best, but use your preferred milk)
    • Whipped cream (optional)

    Instructions

    To Make White Chocolate Mocha
    1. Add 1 and a half tablespoons of the white chocolate sauce into two mugs or glasses.
    2. Brew the espresso or coffee however you prefer to brew it.
    3. Heat the milk to between 140-150 degrees either in a saucepan or an electric milk warmer/frother.  (frothing the milk is fun, but not strictly necessary)
    4. Divide the coffee between the two mugs and stir to combine the white chocolate sauce, then pour the milk over the coffee, and top with whipped cream.

    Notes:

    To make it iced:

Follow the previous instructions, except for heating the milk.

Once everything is mixed together, either fill the cup with ice, or fill a new cup with ice, and pour the coffee over the ice in the new glass. Top with whipped cream.
